ABOUT THE ARTIST

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Carolin is a London-based abstract artist working with oil paint, oil pastels, oil sticks, charcoal and acrylics on both canvas and paper. Her paintings explore inner landscapes — shifting states of emotion, memory, and perception — and are shaped by an intuitive, process-led approach.

Built through layers of colour, texture, and mark-making, her work often begins in chaos before finding a quiet, imperfect balance. Harmony is sought without symmetry, allowing complexity and sensitivity to remain visible. The paintings change with light and atmosphere, inviting an ongoing relationship rather than a fixed reading.

Trained as an architect, Carolin brings a strong sensitivity to material, composition, and quality to her practice. Having lived in Germany, the United States, and Switzerland, she is now based in London, where she founded CAROLIN  M. STUDIO in 2025.

Artist Statement

CAROLIN MEIER

Carolin’s paintings are not fixed statements, but evolving presences. They shift with light, time of day, and season, revealing different moods, colours, and textures as the surrounding atmosphere changes. A work may feel calm and grounding in one moment, more intense or unsettled in another. This openness to transformation is central to her practice. The paintings are intended to remain alive — responsive rather than static — inviting the viewer into an ongoing, perceptual relationship.

Working primarily with oil pastels, oil sticks and acrylics on canvas or handmade, heavy-weight paper, Carolin builds surfaces through layering, gesture, and mark-making. Her process is largely intuitive, guided by inner states that resist verbal expression. Paintings often begin in a space of chaos — an accumulation of colour, movement, and impulse — from which a sense of balance slowly emerges. Harmony is sought, but never symmetry. Structure appears not as control, but as a quiet counterpoint to emotional intensity, reflecting an inner need to create coherence without erasing complexity.

Her work explores emotional processing, memory, presence, and time. Each painting functions as an inner landscape — a visual record of mood, sensation, and lived experience — shaped by sensitivity to environment, season, and rhythm. Travel, nature, music, and dance play an important role in this process, influencing colour palettes, movement, and the spatial dynamics within the work. Carolin is interested in how paintings affect the atmosphere of a space, and how they can subtly alter the emotional tone of their surroundings over time.

Trained as an architect, Carolin holds a Master’s degree in Architecture and spent several years working at Herzog & de Meuron in Switzerland. This background informs her sensitivity to material, composition, and quality, though her approach to painting remains intuitive rather than structural. Architectural thinking surfaces quietly in her work — in the way balance is negotiated, in the weight of forms, and in the attention to surface and proportion — without imposing rigidity or predetermined outcomes.

Art has been part of Carolin’s life since childhood, when drawing became an early and instinctive mode of expression. After living and working in Germany, the United States, and Switzerland, she is now based in London. Since 2025, her artistic practice has taken on renewed focus through the founding of C A R O L I N M. STUDIO. Painting functions not only as a means of expression, but as a way of processing experience, navigating sensitivity, and cultivating inner clarity. Rather than seeking resolution, the work allows complexity to remain visible — held gently within an imperfect, evolving balance.
